New Hampshire — the first state to credit geothermal heating
New Hampshire was the first U.S. state to include geothermal thermal energy in its Renewable Portfolio Standard, beginning in 2012 under SB 218. Qualifying geothermal heat pump systems earn Thermal RECs (T-RECs) tracked via NEPOOL-GIS, worth $25–$29 per MWh. One T-REC equals 3,412,000 BTUs (1 MWh equivalent) of useful thermal energy. Emergent Energy handles the full NH registration process — PUC certification, NEPOOL-GIS enrollment, and market sale — at no upfront cost.

Key Facts
- Legislation: SB 218 (2012) — first in the nation
- Classification: Class I Thermal — Useful Thermal Energy (subset of Class I RPS)
- Eligible technologies: geothermal systems producing thermal energy after January 1, 2013
- Tracking: NEPOOL-GIS (not PJM-GATS)
- Credit unit: 1 T-REC = 3,412,000 BTUs of useful thermal energy (1 MWh equivalent)
- Obligation: grows to 2% of total Class I requirement
- Historical T-REC price range: $25–$29/MWh

How NH Registration Differs from MD/VA
New Hampshire uses the New England Power Pool Generation Information System (NEPOOL-GIS) rather than PJM-GATS used by Maryland and Virginia. Credits are called T-RECs (Thermal RECs) rather than GRECs. The measurement methodology and documentation requirements differ slightly, but the core concept is the same: your geothermal system's thermal output is converted to MWh equivalents and tracked as tradeable credits. Emergent Energy is registered and active on both tracking systems.
How Emergent Energy Handles NH Registration
- Confirm system specs and thermal output documentation
- Submit NH PUC application for renewable thermal facility certification
- Register with NEPOOL-GIS and obtain NH certification
- Manage monthly T-REC issuance and aggregation
- Execute market sales and remit payment
